Overview
One of the most common questions we get is from new startup distilleries is which pump they should get first. To those folks we would submit the XN 114 assembly featuring the QIS 114 pump head is a great place to start.
What makes this pump great for distilleries is the combination of a Class 1, Div II-rated motor and an explosion-proof motor starter. As new distilleries often discover, finding an electric pump that can be used in a distillery is difficult. You can get a groundable air diaphragm pump like something in our SimpleSpirits line, but an air compressor large enough to run an air diaphragm pump can be expensive. Unless you're planning on getting a compressor anyway for other pneumatic equipment, it doesn't always make sense to get one just to run a pump (though you'll almost always find plenty of uses for an air compressor sooner or later).
There are no electronic speed controls on this pump. Those are what typically make XP-rated pumps extremely expensive. There's just the on/off switch. Consequently, to control the flow rate of this pump you should simply install a valve at the outlet and gradually close it off to decrease the pump's flow rate. Open the valve back up to increase the pump's flow rate.
One thing to note, these Class 1, Div II motors are only available in 230/460 V Three Phase. If you only have Single Phase power available in your facility you will need to consider alternate pump types. Give us a call and we can help you choose.
